PROVO BYU ended its 2006 nonconference football slate on a winning note as the Cougars (2-2) blanked Utah State 38-0 last Saturday at Edwards Stadium for the defense's first shutout in seven seasons.
Filling in for injured starter John Beck, Jason Beck went three for 305 yards on 20-of-28 passing, while Fui Vakapuna rumbled his way through the Aggie defense for three rushing touchdowns. Also, Cougar cornerback Justin Robinson returned an interception 64 yards for a TD.
BYU moves to Mountain West Conference competition, with the league-opener today at defending MWC champion TCU. The Horned Frogs nipped the Cougars 51-50 in overtime last year in Provo.
