OREM In the span of just a few minutes, the game between the Timpanogos and Mountain View girls soccer teams went from a tie to a blowout.
The Timberwolves ended up winning the game 4-1, though most of the contest was a lot closer than the three-goal difference would indicate. In the last 20 minutes, Timpanogos turned on its afterburners and took advantage of some big mistakes on the Bruins' backline to pull away comfortably.
It was a much-needed result for the T-Wolves, who had only two wins in their last five games while struggling to solidify a high seeding in the state tournament.
"I was very proud of them," said T-Wolves coach Natalyn Lewis. "We've be in kind of a funk the last couple of games. They played a full game today."
Timpanogos got two goals apiece from senior Stacy Bartholomew and freshman Angelica Dickson to counter Mountain View's lone goal from Auna Janis.
Possessionwise, the game was fairly even, but Timpanogos' talent on the attack showed as it was able to create and take advantage of more opportunities. The Bruins had some good runs of play but couldn't turn most of them into scoring chances.
Bartholomew opened up the scoring in the 25th minute, finding an open space in the box and sliding her shot into the far lower corner.
The 1-0 lead stood until the 57th minute when Janis lined up a free kick from 27 yards out in the middle of the field.
The junior forward scored her team-leading ninth goal of the season, sending the kick low and hard past the wall and off the glove of the diving goalkeeper to tie the game.
Five minutes later, Dickson scored her first goal after a defensive error. Timpanogos sent a long ball into the attacking third that should have been cleared away by the central defender, but Dickson raced in front of her marker and took the ball away for an easy one-on-one score.
Bartholomew put the game away with another goal in the 77th minute her 24th of the season.
Just before the final whistle, Dickson doubled her total with a second goal almost identical to the first, sprinting past a defender before the ball was cleared and slotting the shot past the goalkeeper.
"We just played a nice, easy game," said Dickson. "It was really fun. Last time we lost against Mountain View and we were really mad. We knew this game mattered. We were all working really hard."In other prep soccer action Tuesday:
