World War II exhibit's poignant

Artifacts offer insight into the American war experience

Washburn paid the nuns 20 pounds of sugar and 50 pounds of flour for the flag.

A "home front" display shows how citizens at home dealt with rationing: Christmases without silver ornaments because the metal was needed for military equipment and descriptions of their victory gardens.

The display includes the banners military families hung in their windows. Banners with blue stars showed how many family members were serving in the military. Gold stars over the blue stars indicated a military death.
