A deputy Salt Lake district attorney was officially charged Monday with DUI by the Salt Lake City Prosecutor's Office.
Jon David Shuman, 43, was cited for investigation of driving under the influence, a class B misdemeanor, on Aug. 5. He was stopped by Salt Lake City police at a court-approved administrative checkpoint as was every car that passed through that area.
A police report said officers detected a "strong odor of alcohol" from Shuman and noticed he had "glassy red eyes" and moved "really slow."
Shuman refused to participate in any sobriety tests, however, as well as take a Breathalyzer test.
City Prosecutor Sim Gill said Shuman's case was handled like any other and was screened by a panel of several attorneys to determine if there was enough evidence to file charges.
"We had sufficient basis to go forward," he said.
Gill noted that his office has historically been very aggressive in prosecuting DUIs.
