CROSS COUNTRY: Southern Utah's men's cross country team placed 20th-overall in a strong 34-team field at the 21st annual Minnesota/Roy Griak Invitational on Saturday morning at the UM/Les Bolstad Golf Course in Minneapolis.

In a race that featured nine nationally ranked teams and more than 300 runners, the Thunderbirds held their own as they recorded a 1:12 split time, led by junior Jesson Baumgartner, who was the top SUU finisher in 30th-place with an 8-kilometer time of 25:30.75. Meanwhile junior Mark Currell cracked the top-80 with a 75th-place time 26:03.45, followed by freshman Adam McDonald in 128th at 26:26.65, freshman Rex Shields crossed the line 142nd at 26:33.80 and sophomore Dave Sheeran wrapped up SUU's scoring in 158th at 26:43.45.

Unranked Arizona outscored No. 23 Minnesota to take the men=E2=80=98s team title, 142-153, while No. 26 Virginia outlasted No. 20 Arizona State, 173-182, for third. SUU tallied 492 points overall to finish ahead of 14 teams.

SUU will hit the road for the final time during the regular season next Saturday as both Thunderbird men's and women's squads travel to Riverside, Calif., for the UC Riverside Invitational.

SLCC

VOLLEYBALL: On the Bruins' first stop for their weekend trip to the northwest, they downed the Lady Bigfoot of the Community College of Spokane for the second time this season. Taking a loss in the first match, 25-30, SLCC fired back with 3 straight demanding game victories to add another notch to their season win column.

Misa Hanakova (freshman, Czech Republic) continued stellar play for the week as she made contributions all over the court with 7 kills, 43 assists, 2 aces, and 4 blocks. Also with solid performances were Kris Hymas (sophomore, South Jordan, UT) and Tela Burnett (freshman, Pleasant Grove, UT). Hymas recorded 12 kills, 3 aces, and 4 blocks, while Burnett offered 10 kills, 2 aces, and 5 blocks. Defensive recognition goes to Morgan Lloyd (freshman, Pleasant Grove, UT) as well with 19 digs.

The Bruins end their weekend trip in Couer d'Alene, ID as they open their conference season against the #2 Cardinals of North Idaho. SLCC returns home Sept. 29th and 30th on their home court as they take on the Golden Eagles of Southern Idaho.
