I want to commend the Deseret Morning News for the story, "Finding a voice" (Sept. 19). As an advocate at the Disability Law Center, I have worked to ensure that people with disabilities throughout the state have access to the technology they need to be independent, contributing members of the community. There is something transformative that happens when individuals that were unable to articulate their wants and needs gain the ability to do so.
As the article so clearly points out, when kids are able to express themselves and be engaged with their environment, real learning can take place. The article is a great reminder that there have been some extraordinary advances in technology for people with disabilities. The Disability Law Center is another resource to keep in mind. We provide an array of free legal advocacy services and specifically work with people with disabilities to appeal denials of assistive technology devices and services from Medicaid, Medicare and private insurance.
