3 cheers for vigilant landlady

Three cheers for the landlady who did a background check on "Chet Weseman" and discovered that he was really Kirk Alan Swearingen ("FBI nabs fugitive 'king' of child porn," Sept. 21). Swearingen was not only allegedly stealing the identity of an elderly, innocent victim: Weseman-Swearingen was also the self-proclaimed "king of child pornography." Without the help of vigilant citizens, law enforcement's efforts at protecting the community would be far more arduous.

I urge all landlords to carefully screen tenants, run identity checks and criminal background checks of their prospective tenants. Not only will you potentially save yourselves a lot of heartache, you may well aid law enforcement in catching notorious criminals, not to mention providing relief to their victims.
