OREM The Utah Valley State women's soccer team met with mixed results last weekend during a northwest road trip to the campuses of the University of Idaho and Gonzaga.
The Wolverines (3-4-1) shut out the Vandals 2-0 Friday in Moscow, Idaho, behind strong play from midfielder Courtney Robbins. Sunday in Spokane, however, it was a different story as UVSC fell to the Bulldogs 2-1.
Although Robbins, a two-time 4A player of the year at Mountain View and transfer from BYU, was only credited with one goal against Idaho, in actuality she was responsible for both of Utah Valley's scores. The box score for the first goal is an own-goal in the 14th minute attributed to Vandal goalie Michelle Jordan, but what the box score doesn't say is that Jordan fell into her net after fielding a rocket off the foot of Robbins from 35 yards out. In the 73rd minute, Robbins buried a cross from Jenni Wright into the back of the net to make it 2-0.
Against the Zags, UVSC overcame a first-half deficit when freshman Natalie Hatfield scored her first career goal in the 51st minute to tie the match at 1-1. Although Gonzaga scored the game-winner in the 64th minute, head coach Brent Anderson was encouraged to see some bright spots in his team's play.
"I was pleased with the way we played and it was good to see some of our freshman play well," Anderson said. "I thought we played them fairly well in the first half. We remained calm to start the second half but after the first ten minutes Gonzaga took control of the game."
