District is undecided on officers

Some middle schools reported officers working from just a few hours up to 40 hours a week, and most gave the officers high satisfaction ratings. A handful rated them low. High schools each gave their officers the highest ratings possible, and most say they're in the schools full time, teach classes, and one is paid extra to work events.

Elementaries were not asked to rate their satisfaction with the officers.

Board president Peggy Jo Kennett suggested the board study the information at home.

Board vice president Ellen Wallace suggested letting the money flow this budget year and taking a few months to study the issue.

"I feel like we want to be good neighbors to our cities and our towns," which she felt had counted on the increased district investment in their budgets.

Jolley noted that those with objections to the tentative agreement were to speak up before the budget year started in July.

Board member J. Dale Christensen said he didn't want to spend money just because somebody else might have budgeted for it.

The board discussion last week apparently caught some police agencies off guard. Sandy and West Jordan police officials said officers are a good investment by teaching classes and providing a needed presence in schools.
