A public workshop will be held Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the City Library, 210 E. 200 South, in the basement conference rooms. Space is limited, so anyone interested in attending should RSVP to camille@downtownslc.org. The workshop will allow people to review plans and give input.

More information on Downtown Rising can be found at www.downtownrising.com. The Web site also includes a form for submitting comments and concerns.

The council also heard from transportation planners from the Utah Transit Authority and the city's transportation department. Transportation director Tim Harpst said a number of future light-rail lines are being considered, though the most popular at this point seems to be a westward extension of the 400 South line and a north-south line running along 400 West.

And Community Development director Louis Zunguze dispelled a rumor that Mayor Rocky Anderson's administration is considering asking the council to approve 24-hour construction permits to allow all-night work on the various road and building construction projects already under way downtown.

Zunguze said there have been "no specific requests" for 24-hour permits, though he said he expects there could be. When that happens, the city's staff will look at whether to ask for the council's OK.

Story continues below
Meantime, Zunguze said the city's new construction ombudsman, who was hired in August, wants the council to begin looking into ways it can help ease the troubles associated with construction in busy areas. Among the possible action the council could take would be zoning changes allowing for better construction-related signage.
