Big 2nd half lifts Riverton over West Jordan
Silverwolves score 4 straight TDs after rough opening half
But after adjustments were made at the half, the Silverwolves came out like a house afire, scoring 28 unanswered points en route to a 28-13 romp over West Jordan.
"We were fortunate enough to listen to the kids and they told us some things (at halftime)," said Riverton head coach Mike Miller. "We were able to make some adjustments."
After struggling for a mere 63 yards of total offense in the first half 40 through the air and 23 on the ground the Silverwolves ran all over the West Jordan defense in the second half.
After taking the second half's first possession at their own 24, the Silverwolves needed only three plays to score and eclipse their first-half total yardage.
Quarterback Joe Schrader decided to run a keeper on third-and-3 and he found an opening to his left, marching 67 yards for a game-tying touchdown, just 1:30 into the third period.
Riverton scored again on a long drive when Jordan Marshall found the end zone from 9 yards out. His run capped a five-play, 48-yard drive and put the Silverwolves up for good.
Riverton took the ball at its own 40, put the ball in the hands of Jerris Koplin, and Koplin did the rest, scampering 60 yards for the TD and the 21-7 lead going into the fourth quarter.
Riverton scored on a third big play just three minutes later.
Facing a second-and-9, Schrader ran another keeper. He bounced off a few defenders, managed to keep his balance, and then finally outran the coverage as he went 67 yards for his second score of the evening to put the Silverwolves up 28-7.
Schrader finished with 132 yards and two scores on five carries.
West Jordan's final score came with just eight seconds remaining as Keith Hogan scored on a 2-yard run. The score marked Hogan's second 2-yard TD scamper of the night.
Passing was all but nonexistent. Schrader when 2-for-5 for 40 yards and an interception, while West Jordan's Cache Moran was 2-for-7 for just 30 yards and an INT.
Miller said he feels fortunate that his offensive line made the right blocks to get the backs in the end zone on the long scoring plays.
"Every run is designed to work like that," Miller said with a chuckle. "They were just fortunate that they had the blocks that got them into the end zone."
"We run and they run," Miller said, explaining there was no change to the game plan, adding the game time was just over 2 hours. "We had a feeling this was going to be a very quick game."
