Prostate cancer is the most common cancer among American men, other than skin cancer.

The key to successful treatment of prostate cancer is early detection. While no test can always detect prostate cancer, a yearly prostate exam is the most effective way to pick up the disease at an early, potentially curable stage. There may be no symptoms, or patients may experience inability, difficulty or frequent urination, or pain, burning or pus or blood in the urine.

To help men in Utah detect prostate cancer at its earliest and most treatable stage, Intermountain Healthcare hospitals are offering free prostate screening clinics in September. The screenings are for men who haven't had a prostate exam in the past three years or who have a father or brother who's been diagnosed with prostate cancer. African-American men are especially encouraged to schedule an appointment, as they have the highest incidence rates. Men without health insurance who fit the criteria are also encouraged to schedule an appointment at one of these clinics:

• Sept. 13, 5:30-7:30 p.m. in the Alta View Surgical Center, 9660 S. 1300 East,

• Sept. 19, 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the Cottonwood Hospital Surgical Center, 5770 S. 300 East.

Space is limited and reservations are needed. To make an appointment, call 801-314-4141.
