GRADE A-

Offense

Curtis Brown and Fui Vakapuna combine for 221 yards and two of the prettiest bust-out Cougar runs in recent memory. John Beck tallies an efficient 16-of-21 passing for 240 yards, three TDs and no picks. A bit of a slow start, but the Cougars finish 6-of-6 in the red zone and 8-of-13 in third-down conversions, and had no turnovers.

GRADE B

Defense

The Cougar D gives up two sustained drives — the Tulsa first-half field goal comes after a blocked BYU punt and the last Hurricane TD in post-delay garbage time among subs. BYU holds Tulsa to less than 100 yards rushing and less than 200 passing until the delay.

GRADE B

Special teams

Blocking a punt and giving one away is a wash. Decent kick coverage and better punt coverage. The kickoff return where five Cougars huddled up around the ball before breaking out with the actual ball carrier uncertain earns style points, even though a penalty erased a return of 50-plus yards.

GRADE B+

Overall

Penalties continue to be a problem for the Cougars. A week after being whistled 10 times for 76 yards, BYU gets flagged 11 times for 90 yards — with penalties wiping out some key plays.
