LEHI — The American Fork Cavemen walked into Lehi and came out with a 42-20 victory over their longtime rivals.

The keys to the game as American Fork coach Davis Knight said, "were controlling the football. We had a good ground game, and even though we weren't passing like we'd like, we had five to six good throws." American Fork quarterback Taylor Mangum threw four touchdown passes in the game, and Matt Harward ran in for two more. Lehi's Travis Smith scored all three touchdowns for the Pioneers as the one bright spot in their game.

For almost five minutes it appeared the Pioneers could keep it close, but a fumble recovered by Travis Smith and brought back 31 yards for the first points of the game only gave Lehi a short-lived six-point lead.

A mere 30 sec onds later the Cavemen had marched the ball down the field, and Mangum completed the first of three first-half touchdown passes from 35 yards out. Ryan Sampson grabbed the ball and ran in for the score, and Eddie Holloway added the point after for a 7-6 American Fork lead.

It only got worse for the Pioneers after the first quarter changed into the second. Harward took a Mangum pass with four minutes gone in the quarter and ran past every Lehi defender for a 43-yard touchdown and an eight point lead. Mangum added his third pass for points with two minutes remaining in the first half to Jake Murphey from seven yards out as the Cavemen proceeded to take out a loss to East last week on the Pioneers, who weren't happy heading into the lockerroom at their homecoming game.

American Fork started the second half with a Harward run for a touchdown from one yard out to extend the lead, but Smith got it back for the Pioneers with a 13-yard touchdown of his own.

The Pioneers held onto that score 13 second longer than they did their first as the Cavemen brought it right back down the field and Harward again finished things off with a three-yard run to extend the lead to 35-12.

Anthony McGeary finished the scoring for American Fork on a 42-yard reception from Mangum just as the third quarter was coming to an end. Smith scored the only points in the fourth quarter for Lehi.

"It was a good atmosphere here," said Knight of the homecoming festivities, but at 3-1 we're no closer to the playoffs than we were three weeks ago."
