A man has been charged in 3rd District Court with allegedly stealing a car containing more than $20,000 worth of photography equipment belonging to the Deseret Morning News.
According to documents filed Wednesday, the 31-year-old man stole a car belonging to one of the paper's photography summer interns. She lost nearly $7,500 worth of her own equipment in addition to that belonging to the Morning News.
The man's brother turned him in after he showed up at their parents' house in a vehicle that didn't belong to him, court documents state. Police matched the fingerprints on pawn slips to those of the man, and he was charged with five counts of theft, including two second-degree felonies, one a third-degree felony and two class B misdemeanors.
Much of the equipment was found at various pawn shops but is being held as evidence in the case. The man is being held in the Salt Lake County Jail on $25,000 bail.
