U.S. District Judge Ted Stewart gave the maximum sentence to an Orem man who pleaded guilty in federal court to two counts of possession of child pornography.
Stewart on Thursday sentenced Jacobo Javier Rivera, 33, to 20 years in federal prison. There is no parole in the federal system.
"This case is a graphic example of the significant federal prison sentences we will continue to seek for those individuals who possess or produce child pornography or commit other crimes involving children," U.S. Attorney Brett Tolman said in a statement to the press. "This is conduct we simply are not going to tolerate in Utah and will continue to aggressively prosecute."
Rivera agreed to a plea bargain with prosecutors. As part of that, Rivera said that in April 2005, he owned fewer than 10 images of child pornography, which showed sadistic and masochistic behaviors.
