A closer look at the 2006 Brigham Young University football team

For BYU to reach the top of the Mountain (West), it'll need to take some critical steps along the way:

• Offense needs to produce 40-plus points per game.

• Avoid turnovers and putting defense in bad positions.

• Keep starting quarterback John Beck healthy.

• Develop depth along a young and inexperienced defensive line.

• Improve special teams play, especially in kick coverage.

• Make commitment to running the football.

• Defense needs to avoid giving up cheap touchdowns.

• Win at least three of four nonconference games.

• Go undefeated in games at LaVell Edwards Stadium.

• Win the revenge games against Boston College, TCU and Utah.

QUARTERBACKS

John Beck, 6-2, 216, Sr.

Jason Beck, 6-2, 201, Sr.

Max Hall, 6-1, 185, Fr.

PEAKS: Many MWC observers believe John Beck is the best quarterback in the league. He is surrounded by experience, talent, a more seasoned offensive coaching staff and more knowledge about himself and the capabilities of BYU's offense. Beck should have a stellar season. Backup Jason Beck is adequate if he avoids turnovers, but he doesn't have the arm, delivery or accuracy of John.

VALLEYS: Both Becks are seniors. Jason has been turnover-prone when playing against BYU's second defense through spring and summer drills. Beyond the Becks (no relation), there is a big drop-off in experience. Only ASU transfer Hall has Division I practice experience — no game experience. If the two Becks go down, it will be like 2002 all over again — playing freshmen right off missions.

RUNNING BACKS

Curtis Brown, 6-0, 203, Sr.

Fui Vakapuna, 6-1, 234, So.

Manase Tonga, 5-11, 235, So.
