Sept. 7, 13, 19

Prostate cancer is most treatable when detected early. So Intermountain Healthcare's Alta View, Cottonwood and LDS hospitals are offering free prostate screening clinics in September.

The free screenings are available for men who haven't had a prostate exam in the past three years or who have a father or brother who've been diagnosed with prostate cancer. African-American men are especially encouraged to schedule an appointment, as they have the highest incidence rates. Men without health insurance who fit the criteria are also encouraged to schedule an appointment.

LDS Hospital's free prostate screening clinic is Sept. 7, from 5:30-7:30 p.m., at 370 Ninth Ave., Room 208. Alta View Hospital's free screening clinic is Sept. 13, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. in the Alta View Surgical Center, 9660 S. 1300 East. Cottonwood Hospital's free screening clinic is Sept. 19, from 5:30-7:30 p.m., at the Cottonwood Hospital Surgical Center, 5770 S. 300 East.

Space is limited and requires an appointment. Appointments for screening clinics at all three hospitals can be made by calling 314-4141.

Sept. 8

Life Line Screening will be at the Legacy Retirement Residence, 1617 W. Temple Lane in South Jordan, to screen for stroke risk factors. Appointments will begin at 9 a.m.

The screenings involve the use of ultrasound technology and scan for potential health problems related to blocked arteries, aortic aneurysms that can lead to a ruptured aorta, and hardening of the arteries in the legs, which are a strong predictor of heart disease. Also offered for men and women is a bone-density screening to assess their risk for osteoporosis.

A complete vascular-screening package is $109. The osteoporosis screening is $20 more with the complete vascular screening.

For more information or to schedule an appointment, call 800-697-9721. Pre-registration is required.

Sept. 20

Speakers include Dr. Kenneth P. Moritsugu, acting surgeon general of the United States; Utah Attorney General Mark Shurtleff; and clinical psychologist and author Mark Chamberlain, among others.
