SWAT team members from the Salt Lake City Police Department took two people into custody Thursday morning following the shooting of a rap artist.

The incident began about 12:30 a.m. when a 29-year-old man who had just finished performing at a downtown club got into his car to go home. The concert went on without any problems, said Salt Lake City police detective Joe Cyr.

The first signs of trouble were after the show.

"He noticed a red vehicle was following him after he left the club," Cyr said.

After the man arrived home, at 1320 W. Sunset Drive (1360 North), he was unloading some items from his car when the red car drove by, he said. It stopped two houses down, and two men got out and opened fire.

Cyr said multiple shots were fired. The victim was hit once in the knee. He was taken to a local hospital in serious condition.

Investigators were not sure if the shooting was a gang-related incident, although gang detectives were called to the scene.

Later Thursday morning, detectives developed information on the whereabouts of some of the suspects. SWAT team members surrounded an apartment near 1850 W. North Temple and, using a bullhorn, had two people come out and surrender without incident.

Detectives then went inside with a search warrant. Cyr said evidence related to the shooting was found inside the apartment. Although he would not say specifically what it was, he noted that police were no longer looking for a weapon.

A red car was also found in the parking lot and was being searched by detectives.

As of Thursday afternoon, the two people were being questioned by police and had not officially been arrested.
