FRANCES MAYES, author of a travel memoir, "A Year in the World: Journeys of a Passionate Traveler," will deliver the prestigious DEWEY LECTURE, 7:30 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 9, Salt Lake City Main Library Auditorium, 210 E. 400 South. Free tickets to the lecture will be available Saturday, Sept. 2, at all City Library locations. Tickets may be purchased at The Library Store for a pre-lecture reception with Ms. Mayes, to include reserved seating for the lecture, at $50 each, or $35 each if four or more tickets are purchased at the same time (524-8200).
Mayes' other works include "Under the Tuscan Sun," "Bella Tuscany," "In Tuscany" and "Bringing Tuscany Home." She is especially interested in Italy, renovating old Italian villas and the pleasures of food, wine and gardens. She is formerly a professor of creative writing at San Francisco State University, where she directed The Poetry Center and chaired the Department of Creative Writing.
