Police officers shot a dog that attacked them while they were responding to a call about teenagers trespassing at a golf course Tuesday.

The dog's owner saw the police near his home, at 2400 South and 2500 East, and came out to see what was going on, said Salt Lake City police Lt. J.R. Nelson. The owner said he didn't know the dog, believed to be a Labrador-hound mix, was following him outside of his fenced yard.

When the dog attacked the officers, one of them fired a shot at the dog and injured it, Nelson said. The dog was taken to a veterinarian and later euthanized because it was not expected to recover.

The owner was cited for having a dog at large. The officers were not injured.
