This prompted the Utah Division of Parks and Recreation to put into place new laws that require all off-highway vehicle riders, age 8 until a Utah driver's license is received, to complete the Know Before You Go! training course in order to operate an OHV on public land. Children under 8 cannot operate an OHV on public lands.

Since the introduction of the class, the numbers of ATV injuries here in Utah has dropped significantly.

Among the safety tips given in the class:

• Always wear a helmet. Utah law requires everyone under the age of 18 to wear a helmet while driving or riding, but it's a good idea for riders of all ages to always wear a helmet.

• Ride the right size ATV. Riding a machine that is too large can lead to accidents.

• Don't carry passengers unless the ATV is designed for more than one person.

To register for Know Before You Go! classes or for information on OHV laws and riding areas, contact the OHV Information Center at 801-538-7433 from within Salt Lake City or 1-800-648-7433 from outside the area.
