For his role in helping Real Salt Lake to a pair of victories last week, midfielder Chris Klein was named the Major League Soccer player of the week, edging teammate Jeff Cunningham.
In a 2-1 victory over Columbus on Wednesday, Klein scored in the 75th minute to level the score at 1-1. On Saturday, his controversial goal off the crossbar put RSL in front 1-0, a lead it never relinquished against the Houston Dynamo.
This is Klein's first player of the week honor this year but the sixth time in his nine-year career. By edging Cunningham for the award, Klein prevented his teammate from winning for the third straight week.
In the 21 weeks this season, an RSL player was named player of the week five times.
Klein's goal against Columbus has also been nominated for MLS goal of the week.
