Input sought on judge candidates

The 3rd District Judicial Nominating Commission has chosen 10 individuals as potential candidates to fill two upcoming judicial vacancies.

Third District judges Timothy Hanson and Dennis Frederick plan to retire Dec. 31. The district includes Salt Lake, Summit and Tooele counties.

Nominated as potential judges are:

• Patricia Cassell, of the Salt Lake District Attorney's Office;

• Augustus Chin, Summit County Attorney's Office;

• Scott Daniels, private arbitrator and mediator;

• Michael Evans, 3rd District Court commissioner;

• Robert Faust, attorney;

• Carolyn Nichols, Utah State Attorney General's Office;

• Lisa Remal, Salt Lake Legal Defenders Association;

• Paula Smith, Salt Lake District Attorney's Office;

• Kate Toomey, Salt Lake City deputy counsel, Utah State Bar;

• Vernice Trease, Salt Lake Legal Defenders Association.

Larry Lunt, who heads the nominating commission, is accepting written comments about the nominees. Send information to the Administrative Office of the Courts, P.O. Box 140241, Salt Lake City, UT, 84114-0241. The deadline is Aug. 23.
