BOULDER, Garfield County — A 5-year-old boy was killed Saturday when he tripped while carrying a loaded .22-caliber rifle.

The Garfield County Sheriff's Office has determined the shooting was accidental, saying the boy was target shooting — under the adult supervision of family members — near Lower Bounds Reservoir, not far from Boulder. The accident occurred about 1 p.m.

The sheriff's office did not release the boy's name Sunday, saying the incident still was being investigated.
