Banned items on airlines

As of early this morning, the Transportation Security Administration is not allowing airline passengers to bring items in their carry-on bags that contain liquid, gel or substances of similar consistency, including all flights departing from and arriving to Salt Lake City.

Air travelers are expected to put those items inside their checked luggage or leave them at home.

Passengers were caught unaware and many discarded items not being allowed aboard planes today, according to Ron Malin, federal security director for TSA in Utah. Passengers have been asking questions, he added, but they've been understanding.

So far, the changes have not had a huge impact on lines.

"Lines have been a little longer this morning, but nothing extraordinary," Malin said.

He was not able to say how long the ban on items containing liquids will last.

He said airlines have been asked to notify passengers of the new regulations before they reach security checkpoints.

Banned items include:

• All beverages

• Shampoo

• Suntan lotion

• Creams

• Toothpaste

• Hair gels

• Contact lens solution

• All items of similar consistency to those mentioned above.

Exceptions include:

• Baby formula, breast milk or juice if a baby or small child is traveling.

• Prescription medicine with a name that matches the passenger's ticket.

• Essential non-prescription medicine.
