Collie winks
Senior wide receiver Zac Collie is catching sleep in short bursts the past week after he and his wife, Emmalee, brought home their premature daughter, Shae, from the hospital last Friday. Born June 8, more than 10 weeks early, Shae requires constant attention and special equipment in the Collie apartment. The couple welcomed Shae home from the neonatal unit of a Provo hospital a month earlier than expected. She was supposed to be born Sept. 5 and a due date is a baseline rule for releasing premature babies to a home setting. Zac Collie, who spent several overnight stays at the hospital last week with Emmalee to train on equipment, caught a 40-yard touchdown from John Beck during 11-on-11 drills Monday.
Depth chart
Bronco Mendenhall said his depth chart will be in constant flux until Saturday, when his staff decides who is first, second and third string. On defense Monday, where everyone's job but senior middle linebacker Cameron Jensen is up for grabs, the Cougar starters were comprised of Justin Robinson and Kayle Buchanan at corners with Quinn Gooch and Dustin Gabriel at safeties. In the 3-4 front, the linemen were Judd Anderton, Hala Paongo and Jan Jorgensen with linebackers Markell Staffieri, Chris Bolden, Bryan Kehl and Jensen. As in Saturday's initial practice, Bolden was very impressive, posting several sacks.
Senior linebacker Gary Lovely missed Monday's practice without coach Bronco Mendenhall knowing the reason at the conclusion of drills. "I'll find out why but right now I don't know why he was not here," Mendenhall said.
Ball distribution
In a short 11-on-11 segment to end Monday's practice, 13 different receivers caught passes. John Beck completed 10-of-11 passes for 81 yards and a touchdown pass to Collie. Jason Beck took second reps and completed 7-of-11 passes for 46 yards. Cole Miyahira intercepted Jason Beck during 7-of-7 drills. JC transfer Andre Saulsberry fired up the defense when he broke up a Jason Beck pass intended for Ryan Neeley and Kehl concluded defensive highlights by wrestling a John Beck pass out of the hands of Curtis Brown and running for a short touchdown.
