PROVO A man was arrested and booked into the Utah County Jail on $50,000 cash or bond bail after police found what they believe was nearly 400 pounds of marijuana in his van.
The man, 24, from Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, Canada, was stopped Friday by a Utah Highway Patrol trooper in Orem for traffic violations, according to a police report filed in 4th District Court.
When the trooper asked for the man's license and registration, he smelled what he believed was raw marijuana wafting from the open window, according to the statement.
The trooper told the man, who denied he had anything illegal in the van, that he was going to search the van because he thought he could smell an odor of marijuana, the report states.
He found nothing in a search of the front seat. The trooper then called for a police dog trained to sniff out narcotics.
The police dog alerted officers to the back of the van, where they found 20 boxes full of a green, leafy substance.
The man was arrested for investigation of possession of marijuana.
