From Deseret News archives:
District attorney is cited for DUI
Jon David Shuman, 43, was stopped about 1:30 a.m. Saturday during a court-approved administrative checkpoint by Salt Lake City police. Police had made notice earlier in the Deseret Morning News and on several local television stations that all cars traveling on 300 West near 1100 South would be stopped.
Shuman was pulled over in his 2002 Lexus RX 900. His wife and one other passenger were also in the car, according to a police report obtained through a GRAMA request by the Morning News.
Officers detected a "strong odor of alcohol" from Shuman and noticed he had "glassy red eyes," the report stated.
Shuman moved "really slow" while looking for his license and registration, the report stated.
Police then asked Shuman to perform field sobriety tests.
"He replied, 'no,'" according to the report.
Other comments made by Shuman and his wife to police were taken out of the report released to the media.
While an officer was reading Shuman his rights, he began to dial his cell phone, according to the police report. When he refused an officer's command to stop, the cell phone was taken away from him and he was placed in handcuffs, the report stated.
Shuman was given a citation, his license was taken away, his car was impounded and he was released at the scene to his friends.
The Salt Lake District Attorney's Office on Monday declined to comment on the case.
A total of 93 citations were handed out during the checkpoint operation. Seven of those were for DUI. Two minors were issued citations for being in possession of alcohol.
In the most bizarre incident of the evening, a man who had his car impounded by officers at the checkpoint was arrested a short time later after he walked to a nearby club and pulled a knife on patrons, according to a police report.
