Elvis will be in the building when the Kansas City Chiefs play the Green Bay Packers in their NFL exhibition opener in Tokyo Sunday, and he'll be singing a happy tune.
Elvis Grbac, the Chiefs' No. 1 quarterback, is anxious to test the Chiefs' new, aggressive offense under coordinator Jimmy Raye."I think it suits my abilities," Grbac said. "Jimmy Raye has given me the tools to go downfield as much as possible."
Under Raye, the Chiefs are expected to play a more wide-open offense, throwing more long passes. In the past, Kansas city relied on safe, short tosses.
"We will have some things that we do that are much different than in the past," Chiefs coach Marty Schottenheimer said
Neither starting quarterback - Grbac or the Packers' Bret Favre - is expected to play more than one quarter as Schottenheimer and Green Bay coach Mike Holmgren give their reserves and rookies a lot of playing time.
Meanwhile, the first Hall of Fame game in prime time has Pitts-burgh against Tampa Bay today at Canton, Ohio.
The Steelers and Bucs also have visions of a Super Bowl meeting.
But don't expect a Super Bowl-type game. Neither team wants to reveal too much.
"You want to win," Bucs coach Tony Dungy said. "But you don't want to show everything that you feel like you might be able to do. . . . You definitely want them to realize how it's going to be the next time you play them, but you've got to save some bullets."
The game follows the induction of the 1998 class of Paul Krause, Tommy McDonald, Anthony Munoz, Mike Singletary and Dwight Stephenson.
In the weekend's other exhibition game, the San Francisco 49ers meet the New England Patriots at San Francisco.
New England coach Pete Carroll, a San Francisco native who spent two years as the 49ers' defensive coordinator, said the game can help set the tone for the season.
"This has a little something special to it," he said. "We are going to try and win, but we have a lot of things to accomplish. I would like to see us play with great intensity and start the season at a level that we can build from. . . . If we'll do that, then we'll have accomplished something in the first couple weeks of camp."
As for the 49ers, Jerry Rice's return probably won't happen until San Francisco opens the regular season against the New York Jets Sept. 6.
