Wilson Elementary hopes to set standard

Wilson teachers were put through a rigorous hiring process and were selected based on expertise and endorsements and willingness to collaborate, officials say. Still, they don't reflect the diversity of the students they teach.

But Hart says the school works to cultivate diversity and bring the community in through English classes available at the Granite Education Center for immigrants, a baby shower last year for two moms from different parts of the world and parent meetings in English and Spanish. The school also has hired a translator who knows four African dialects and has worked with a community leader to help refugee students from warring factions maintain peace at school.

"We just do everything we can to get parents here and get them involved. I think that's the key," Hart said. "We've learned a lot along the way."

The school uses arts and technology — upper-grade teachers are working toward certification in that discipline now — to bring lessons to life. Fifth- and sixth-graders stay with the same teacher both years to give students stability.

"We envisioned an opportunity to teach teachers as well as students, " said Linda Mariotti, Granite assistant superintendent for instructional services. "Wilson's educators have received training in proven practices and strategies that will help these children learn at higher rates."
