A fast-moving storm marched through Tooele County and into the Salt Lake Valley, bringing with it rain that swamped streets and flooded houses.

Violent gusts of winds toppled trees, tore roofs off buildings and downed power lines.

The storm focused its intensity on the east side of Salt Lake County in the Millcreek area and then swept south into Utah County, where roofs of hangars at the Provo Airport were ripped away and planes were tossed upside down.

Public safety officials scrambled to keep up with the calls related to the havoc caused by the storm, which authorities reported dumped more than an inch of water in Salt Lake City in an hour's time.

Flood problems prompted the evacuation of Beehive Elementary School in Kearns, where children were shuttled to the nearby Oquirrh Fitness Center.

The Reid School near 3300 South and 2900 East suffered damage from a wind-blown tree that was shoved through a window.

Winds also reportedly knocked out power to an estimated 16,000 households and shut down some traffic signals on both the east and west sides of the Salt Lake valley, snarling traffic.

Provo City hall sustained flood damage, as as well as several homeowners.

Continued unsettled weather, with the possibility of a new wave of storms, was expected through the rest of the afternoon.
