WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Returning sophomore forward Mary Martha Abell was one of five Cougars honored by the MWC as scholar-athletes.

Abell compiled a 3.68 GPA in pre-management. Senior Laura Stratton was also honored with a 3.55 GPA. Provo native Cassie King compiled a 3.72 GPA in her first year. Teammates Rachel Aina and Vanessa Hutson, from Murray, freshmen, picked up awards at 3.59 and 3.57.

Utah/BYU

VOLLEYBALL: BYU and Utah are co-favorites to win the 2006 Mountain West Conference women's volleyball title, and Cougar Lindsy Hartsock is expected to repeat as MWC Player of the Year in a preseason coaches/media poll released Tuesday.

BYU and Utah split 12 of the 14 first-place votes between the Cougars and Utes, both schools earning 116 total points. Colorado State received two first-place votes and 101 points for third in the poll.

Weber State

FOOTBALL CLINIC: Women ages 16 and up are invited to spend an evening with Weber State football coach Ron McBride at the second Weber State Women's Clinic Thursday, Aug. 3, at Weber's Stewart Stadium from 5:30 p.m. to 8:45 p.m. Cost is $15 per person, which includes a clinic T-shirt and snacks.

Check in and registration is 5-5:30 on the stadium's third floor.
