The unfolding of the events on Monday, July 24, end in the horrific discovery of 5-year-old Destiny Norton's body in the house of a neighbor.

Near midnight July 23 — Salt Lake Police Chief Chris Burbank authorizes the issuance of an Amber Alert after a witness reports seeing a girl matching Destiny Norton's description in a black truck with an adult male at a service station in Farmington.

• The alert is canceled at 4:29 a.m. after that lead fails to pan out.

6:30 p.m. — Police release a sketch of a man they say they are still seeking in connection with the sighting, attributing the confusion to two men in dark-colored pickup trucks who made stops at the same location.

8:30 p.m. — Police search the apartment of Craig Roger Gregerson and find Destiny's body. The apartment, behind the Nortons' home where Destiny was last seen, is less than 100 feet from the home. Gregerson is taken into custody.

10:30 p.m. — Burbank holds a news conference outside the Salt Lake police station to announce the discovery of Destiny's body and Gregerson's arrest.

10:40 p.m. — Friends and other supporters start to gather in the neighborhood and react with outrage.

Midnight — Burbank shows up at the neighborhood to try to calm angry residents and holds an impromptu news conference.

1:42 a.m. July 25 — Gregerson is booked into the Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of criminal homicide and child kidnapping.
