PROVO Fire crews from Provo and the U.S. Forest Service were able to quickly contain a five-acre fire in Rock Canyon Friday evening.
Crews from Provo Fire responded to the blaze, located on the north slope a short distance from the trailhead, shortly after 5 p.m. Initially, there was concern that the location of the fire would hamper efforts to contain it.
"It was steep, and the fire moved rapidly because of the dry brush up there," said Capt. Ed Scott of Provo Fire.
Scott credited calm winds for allowing crews to get the situation under control before the evening breeze became an issue. The blaze was essentially contained by 6 p.m., when the Forest Service arrived to assume control, Scott said.
Provo firefighters began rotating off the scene just after 8 p.m., and a Forest Service crew was to remain in the canyon overnight to monitor the situation and extinguish lingering hot spots.
Industrial accident kills Colorado man
VINEYARD An industrial accident on a power plant construction site killed a Colorado man Friday afternoon.
The victim's name was not immediately released, pending notification of his family.
The accident happened at about 1 p.m. near 1800 West and 1800 North in Vineyard. According to police reports, the man was helping offload a steel tube from a semi trailer at the time of the accident. Workers were using a trackhoe to lift the tubes, and the victim was on the ground, using rope to help steady and guide the tubes.
According to the report, the chain holding up the tube came undone on one end, causing the tube to fall and hit the victim. Witnesses were unable to explain exactly what caused the chain to come off, police say.
Attempts by paramedics to revive the man at the scene were unsuccessful.
S.L. hiker's body found in Colorado
SILVERTON, Colo. (AP) Crews looking for a 29-year-old Salt Lake City hiker found his body Friday on Vestal Peak in southern Colorado, San Juan County Sheriff Sue Kurtz said.
Brent Higgins apparently suffered a fall, likely of 1,000 feet or more, Kurtz said.
Higgins had set out for a five-mile hike across the Animas River to the Grenadier Range while his wife, Shannon, and their son stayed at their campsite near Lake Molas off U.S. 550. He was reported missing Monday after failing to meet up with his family as planned Sunday.
Searchers got a better clue of where Higgins might be Friday after citizens turned in a camera they had found, with pictures of Higgins stored on it.
"We looked at the pictures on the memory card, and on the memory card was his wife and baby and him," Kurtz said. "So we immediately redistributed our search and rescue resources and started an intense search."
About 35 people searched for Higgins on Friday and found his body on Vestal Peak, about 10 miles south of Silverton, around 1 p.m., Kurtz said. His body was taken to a mortuary in Durango.
