RIVER CANOE TRIP

The Utah Rivers Council has scheduled an evening canoe trip on the Jordan River for Wednesday. Paddlers will explore the fascinating urban river. They will learn about the natural history of the Jordan and the ongoing work to restore this city-slicker river.

This trip is free. Gear to be provided by REI. The trip will run from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Space is limited, so RSVP to sarah@utahrivers.org or call 801-486-4776.

TRAIL, CRAG WORK

Backcountry.com, the U.S. Forest Service, Salt Lake Climbers Alliance and the Access Fund will hold a day of trail building and crag terracing at Ruth Lake in the Uintas.

The event will be Saturday starting at 9:30 a.m. and ending at 3:30 p.m.

The day will include trail building and designation from the Ruth Lake Trail to the base of the first crag, terracing the base of the crag and the west talus.

There will be beverages and a free barbecue. There is also free camping in the group area on Saturday. Those participating will receive a swag bag and raffle ticket for a gear giveaway.

IRON MISSION CRAFTS

The staff at Iron Mission State Park Museum is sponsoring a two-day gourd-craft workshop Saturday and July 29.

The cost is $50 per person and covers all supplies and museum entrance. Conducted in three sessions, the workshop combines visual instruction with hands-on experience. Participants will receive an introductory lecture regarding gourd history, learn the fundamentals of growing and drying gourds, learn the basic use of tools and be involved in all stages of gourd crafting. Class participants will select, design and finish a gourd piece.

The number of workshop participants is limited to six. Early registration is encouraged by calling 435-586-9290.

There will also be a three-day camp — Aug. 3-5 — for children 9 to 11. The camp will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Participation is limited to 20 children.

Participants will attend a pioneer school, intern in various trades such as printing, carpentry and blacksmithing and will load a handcart and trek to a new homestead to build a log cabin and build basic pioneer furniture. The cost is $75 per child. The cost covers the many items each child will make and take home and includes two tickets for the celebration dinner on Aug. 5. For information call 435-586-9290.

HUNT PERMIT RESULTS

Results of Utah's 2006 Antlerless Big Game Draw and a list of hunting permits not taken in the draw will be available soon.

Successful applicants should receive their permit in the mail by July 27. Everyone who applied should receive a list of permits that were not taken in the draw. This list should arrive in the mail or via e-mail.

Permits not taken in the draw will be available for purchase Aug. 3, beginning at 8 a.m.

Beginning at 8 a.m. on July 27, results of the draw and a list of permits not taken in the draw also will be available on the DWR Web site — wildlife.utah.gov — and by calling the Utah Wildlife Administrative Services office at 1-800-221-0659.
