How to tell if pilot's sober?

The incident of the Southwest Airlines co-pilot who faces federal DUI charges raises questions. The screener, who detected alcohol on the pilot's breath, should be applauded for her sniffing ability. Is sniffing a requirement of the job? Does one have to have a good nose to become a screener?

As an occasional air traveler, is there some way I can find out if my particular pilot has been tested for alcohol? Could I check the pilot's breath myself? How close to his face should I get? What if he's holding his breath?

I would appreciate answers to these important questions.
