PROVO A man drowned just outside the Provo harbor at Utah Lake after swimming between two jetties late Tuesday afternoon.
Billy Joe Haney, 29, of Pleasant Grove was with another man and woman, whom police declined to identify, when the incident occurred about 4:40 p.m. None of the three was wearing a life jacket.
Haney became short of breath and grabbed at the other two in the water, attempting to climb on top of his companions. The woman said she tried to hang on to him as long as she could, but was forced to let go when he started to pull her down with him and Haney never resurfaced.
Provo Search and Rescue and Utah County Search and Rescue recovered the body at 6:25 p.m. in an area only nine feet deep after dredging the water with wave runners.
