Aggie Ice Cream
Where: 750 N. 1200 East, Logan
What: Ice cream good enough to inspire a passionate cult following among Utah State University alumni and many others and even a successful mail-order business (see www1.usu.edu/aggieicecream). Flavors include classics plus ever-evolving new varieties after all, this shop is, at its root, a classroom.
Brigham Young University Creamery
Where: The original creamery is north of BYU's Deseret Towers residence halls, but easier to reach is the newer "Creamery on Ninth," at the site of the former Kent's grocery store at 1209 N. 900 East. It has good hours, too: 7 a.m.-midnight, Monday-Saturday.
What: All sorts of good ice cream flavors at reasonable prices in a university setting.
Farr Better Ice Cream parlor
Where: 286 21st St., Ogden
What: A truly classic ice cream experience in a parlor that's been dishing it out since 1920. Crowds are typical, but the place has added outdoor seating, and customers move through quickly. Don't miss the homemade waffle cones.
Jake's Over the Top
Where: Original location at 1225 Country Hills Drive in Ogden, other locations (some combined with Taco Maker and/or Mayan Jamma Juice) in Cedar City, Centerville, West Valley, Kaysville, Park City, Providence, Roy, West Jordan
What: Enormous, thick "avalanche" shakes with personalized mix-ins, plus other ice cream favorites. Unless you go in for competitive eating, get the junior or the mini.
Peach City
Where: 306 N. Main, Brigham City
What: A retro-style ice cream stop that takes Brigham City's signature product, the peach, to wonderful heights. A local favorite that has a bit of a regional reputation, as well. Worth the drive to north Brigham City.
