TAYLORSVILLE — On the day the city honored its 10th birthday, a couple hundred runners celebrated by jogging through some of the neighborhoods of the 'burb.

In conjunction with Taylorsville Dayzz, one of the state's newest cities held its first family fun run. And, though not intended to be a competitive event this year, it may develop into a popular stop on the local racing scene.

"This is our first one," said race organizer Dave Goddard. "It's kind of special because it coincides exactly with our 10-year anniversary as a city. We wanted to have something like this to encourage fitness and activity."

The 5-kilometer course started at the city hall and headed south through the neighborhoods of the city before returning to the finish line through other neighborhoods.

"We wanted it to be more than just a fun run," said Goddard, part of Taylorsville's Leisure Activities Recreation and Parks committee. "We thought it would be a good way for people to get to know different parts of the city and become better neighbors."

Attracting family participation was one of the goals of the race, and when a mother arrived to register with four children and a dog all dressed in matching T-shirts, Goddard smiled.

"That's what we want," Goddard said. "We're just trying to build the community more."
