Golfers at hole No. 9 at Eaglewood Golf Course in North Salt Lake face plenty of obstacles but are rewarded with beautiful scenery and a wide array of services.
Eaglewood Golf Course
NORTH SALT LAKE If you gaze high up the east bench in North Salt Lake you'll most likely see glimpses of a golf course rated in the top five in Utah.
Dubbed Utah's "public country club," Eaglewood Golf Course towers over the valley and calls out to all golfers below who feel up to the challenge that this mountain course provides.
A bit of advice for the brave: Frequent the driving range before attempting to master the mountain.
Just seven miles north of downtown Salt Lake City, Eaglewood is carved out of a mountain and challenges golfers in every way possible. Meticulously placed bunkers, lakes and rough torment the average hacker or the experienced player throughout the course.
Elevated tee shots on most holes give outstanding views, and provide fun, challenging drives. With the greens as sloped as they are, hitting the fairway is crucial to a successful round.
Pin knowledge is a key element on this design and must be taken serious to get the ball close to the hole, barring a miracle. Hitting the fairways is easier said than done. Most fairways at Eaglewood trace through houses, mountainside, thick shrubbery or water so the width of each fairway is scarce, making the challenge that much more enjoyable.
And all this is BEFORE the wind picks up. If the wind does decide to start howling and twisting through the North Salt Lake mountainside good luck.
The challenge is real. But you can score if you take what the course gives you. It's not a long course so you don't have to necessarily be a heavy hitter to succeed. If you keep the ball in the fairway with fairway woods or low-irons, your chances of having a pleasant round will increase greatly. The par-5s are short in comparison to the norm, and they'll give you opportunities for birdies. Let the fairway be your friend.
Shake hands with the neighborhood on the back nine as you make your way through a Davis County subdivision. Various 10-year-old salespersons will greet you with their pitches for lemonade or found golf balls. There's a great chance you'll buy back a ball you've just lost on a previous hole.
Wildlife surrounds you at Eaglewood. Deer, moose, squirrels and bald eagles will be spectators to your every shot. It is a beautiful setting for golf.
Tee-times are recommended and are taken a week in advance. The pro shop phone number is 299-0088.
Eaglewood provides great services for the golfer in a full-scale grill, driving range, putting greens and league play. For the romantics, Eaglewood has an exceptional, classy setting for a wedding reception or banquet.
The golf is challenging, but not ridiculous, and worth the challenge to see where your game is really at. Because, believe me, it'll let you know quickly.
