The United States Championship Dutch Oven Cook Off takes place Friday at Wheeler Farm, 6351 S. 900 East, as part of the Days of '47 celebration. The event opens to the public at 2 p.m., with an awards ceremony at 7 p.m. Spectators are invited to come and watch.
Each team prepares a main dish, bread and dessert, all in Dutch ovens. The dishes are judged on taste, doneness, recipe, difficulty, presentation and flavor. The winner will go home with at least $1,000. There is also a prize of $500 for the best beef dish. Camp Chef, a Utah-based Dutch oven maker, will be handing out free information for those who want to learn more about Dutch oven cooking (www.campchef.com).Three Utah chefs are cooking in a Steel Chef competition Saturday at The Canyons Resort. Todd Mark Miller, Metropolitan's chef, and Warren Willey from Westgate Grill will face off at 3 p.m. The winner will then cook against defending champion Zane Holmquist from Stein Eriksen's Glitretind Restaurant at 5 p.m. Each chef must make as many dishes as possible in the allotted time frame, using a surprise ingredient that is announced on stage. The dishes are judged on taste, creativity and presentation. Cost to attend is $50 per person (teamsage.com).
Hard Rock International is inviting firefighters to try the restaurant chain's new Bar-B-Que Ribs and Hickory Bar-B-Que Chicken for free on Tuesday. The Hard Rock Cafes across the country will also be delivering some of these items to fire stations as a way to thank firefighters and to promote the new menu items (hardrock.com).
Chick-fil-A is hosting a Second Annual Cow Appreciation Day July 14. Each person that comes to any of Chick-fil-A's 1,250 restaurants dressed as a cow will receive a free Chick-fil-A Combo Meal. Many of the restaurants will also have cow-related games and activities (chickfila.com).
Mary Lee Harrison of Richfield is a finalist in the national "Elsie's Family Favorites Recipe Contest," sponsored by the makers of Borden Cheese. The contest celebrates treasured family recipes.
From now through Aug. 1, visitors can go to www.elsie.com and vote for Harrison's Yummy Seafood Casserole. The grand-prize winner receives a $5,000 kitchen makeover, plus a visit and home-cooked meal from celebrity chef Curtis Aikens.
