PROVO — A man was caught near a snow field, a waterfall and a cliff Wednesday night after falling nearly 500 feet near Aspen Grove in Provo Canyon.

Police say the man was hiking alone when he fell.

Utah County dispatchers said another hiker spotted the victim on the edge of a waterfall at about a 9,300-foot elevation, waving his arms frantically, around 6:55 p.m.

Dispatchers said the man's location made it difficult for helicopters to land, and it would take several hours for search and rescue teams to reach him on foot. Rescue crews were prepared to spend the night in the canyon if necessary.

Crews reported the man was conscious. The extent of his injuries was unknown, as were his name and age.
