CASPER, Wyo. The Orem Owlz held on for a 3-2 win on the road Monday night as Orem finished off a sweep of its three-game series with the Casper Rockies.
After entering the ninth with a 3-1 cushion, the Owlz let Casper (1-6) back into the game as the Rockies scored one and placed runners on first and third with one out remaining. Relief pitcher Darren O'Day then struck out Casper's Hector Gomez to retire the side and end the game.
Orem (5-2) first got on the board in the fifth when Grodon Gronkowski crossed the plate on a Ryan Mount single. Two batters later, Scott Knazek's RBI single gave Orem a 2-0 lead. Julio Perez finished the scoring for the Owlz in the sixth, coming home on a Tyler Johnson single.
Owlz starting pitcher Anthony Ortega struck out seven and gave up just four hits in the winning effort.
IDAHO FALLS 1, OGDEN 0: At Idaho Falls, Ogden shortstop Juan Rivera couldn't field a slow-roller in time to throw home and prevent the winning run in the bottom of the ninth as the Chukars (5-2) outlasted the Raptors (3-4) in a pitching duel.
Ogden pitchers kept Idaho Falls scoreless for most of the game, but a grounder from the Chukars' Marc Maddox allowed Eduardo Nunez to sprint home from third with the winning run.
