Change of mind: Carney in Utah

Last month, Rodney Carney's agent told the Memphis Commercial Appeal his client wouldn't work out for teams picking later than 10th in Wednesday's NBA draft.

Sunday, the University of Memphis senior swingman auditioned for the Jazz — owners of the draft's No. 14 overall selection.

Reality check?

"It's the NBA Draft. Anything can happen," said Carney, one of several prospects the Jazz are pondering at 14 — and one they lobbied hard to come to town. "My range, people say, is top 10 to 12. But me personally, I think anything can happen."

His willingness to work out in Utah, Carney suggested, also was influenced by his knowledge of Jazz needs.

"If I come here," he said, "I'll bring athleticism and shooting. It will be a good fit.

"Say, for instance, Boston — we didn't work out there, because, realistically, I'm not gonna be there. They have swing players. But here, they need a swing player, a shooter. . . . This made sense for me to come here, so I came."

BOOZER, BOOZER, BOOZER: According to Monday's Chicago Tribune, "the big deal floating around is (Philadelphia's Allen) Iverson to Boston, (Utah's Carlos) Boozer to the 76ers and (Boston's Wally) Szczerbiak to the Jazz."

That rumor, however, was also shot down in multiple reports Monday — including the Chicago newspaper itself.

"Of course, more parts have to be included," longtime Tribune NBA writer Sam Smith noted, "though I couldn't see the 76ers dealing Iverson within their division, even if divisions are almost meaningless."

According to the Boston Globe, "A recent conversation between the Celtics and 76ers concerned a possible trade involving Iverson, according to a league source. . . . The same source said no deal was on the table, or even close to being considered."

Celtics basketball boss Danny Ainge and "a 76ers source," ESPN.com's Chad Ford wrote in his Internet blog, "told me there was no substance to the rumor that the Celtics were in major trade talks with the 76ers and Jazz in a deal that would send Boozer to Philly, Szczerbiak to the Jazz and either Iverson or, more likely, Samuel Dalembert to Boston. The 76ers source said the deal had never even been discussed."
