A 39-year-old Salt Lake County woman who became lost while hiking was rescued Sunday night by a search and rescue team.
The woman, whose name was unavailable, called 911 about 5:10 p.m. after she became lost while hiking from Alta to Brighton, said Salt Lake County Sheriff's Sgt. Todd Griffiths.
The woman was spotted from the air about 8 p.m. by a Utah Department of Public Safety helicopter. She was at the top of Silver Fork Canyon on a ridge between Big Cottonwood and Little Cottonwood canyons.
Griffiths said it took awhile to find the woman because she was unsure of her location, and search crews on the ground had been looking far from where she was located.
The helicopter flew two members of the Salt Lake County Search and Rescue team to a spot near the woman. They hiked to her and helped her walk about a quarter mile, where they were met by rescuers on ATVs. Those rescuers had used an old Jeep trail to drive up near the top of the canyon, Griffiths said.
The woman was safely down the mountain by 9:45 p.m. Aside from a few bumps and bruises, she was fine and did not require hospital treatment. She drove herself home, Griffiths said.
