The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has announced it will build its first temple in Honduras, in the city of Tegucigalpa.

"We are confident that this will be a blessing to the many faithful saints in this and surrounding areas who have had to travel long distance to enjoy the blessings of the temple," the LDS First Presidency said in a letter to church members.

The temple will serve members in Honduras and Nicaragua, where there are more than 168,000 members of the church. It becomes the church's fourth in Central America and its 134th temple worldwide to be operating, announced or under construction.
