President Bush is taking sides in the Republican primary in Utah's 3rd Congressional District, the Deseret Morning News has learned.

The president is endorsing five-term Congressman Chris Cannon , who is being challenged by Eagle Mountain businessman John Jacob.

"Chris Cannon has been a strong leader and loyal Republican in Congress," President Bush said in a statement sent Tuesday to the Cannon campaign by the White House. "He has stood shoulder-to-shoulder with me as we fought to cut taxes, reduce spending, protect traditional values and secure the border.

"Utah has a decisive, capable and courageous leader in Chris Cannon. I ask you to join me in supporting his continued service in the U.S. House of Representatives."

Jacob has criticized Cannon and the president on their proposals for comprehensive immigration reform.
