LOGAN — There will be no smoking on the opening night of the Cache County Fair & Rodeo in August.

The County Council decided unanimously Tuesday to ban cigarette use, but stopped short of ruling out smokeless tobacco during "family night."

Last month, the Bear River Governing Youth Council, a group of sixth- to 12th-grade students who promote healthy lifestyles, requested the council consider restricting any form of tobacco.

Officials decided not to prohibit smoking for the entire event or the arena because they were concerned about the possibility of discouraging top cowboys from attending.

"We're excited that the council was supportive of our efforts to reduce exposure to secondhand smoke," said Holly Budge, the groups adviser. "Of course, we'd like to see the entire fairgrounds, including the rodeo, involved, but this is a good first step."

County Councilman Craig Petersen said the students' enthusiasm was a factor in his decision.

"One reason I was supportive is because the youth group had been so involved and because they were supportive," he said. "I agree with them that its important to create family-oriented, smoke-free environments."

The prohibition includes restrooms, spectator and concession areas and the carnival.

If someone is smoking illegally, law enforcement officers will ask the individual to stop. Officers will issue citations if the person does not comply, said County Attorney George Daines.
