PHOENIX In the first round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, BYU lost to the Arizona Sahuaros, 5-1, Wednesday in Phoenix.
"Arizona is an excellent team," BYU coach Chris Watkins said. "They have three players from the Trinidad and Tobago national pool. The score was a little bit deceiving because we pushed all our players up to try and get a score, but the loss is nothing to be embarrassed about. They are a fantastic team."
After both teams blanked in the first half of action, Arizona's Thomas Koskavage opened up the second period with a quick goal, followed soon after with two goals from Giber Becerra.
BYU's Brock Trejo found the back of the net in between the goals from Becerra, but that was the only time the Cougars would score.
Arizona went on to net two additional goals on the evening.
BYU will return its focus to the Premier Development League, taking on Tacoma and Yakima Friday and Saturday in Washington. Games times are set for 7:05 p.m.
